xAPI Camp - IPL Conference

The xAPI Overview Broadly defined, the Experience API (xAPI) lets applications share data about human performance. More precisely, xAPI lets you capture (big) data on human performance, along with associated instructional content or performance context information. xAPI applies human (and machine) readable “activity streams” to tracking data and provides sub-APIs to access and store information about state and content. This enables nearly dynamic tracking of activities from any platform or software system—from traditional Learning Management Systems (LMSs) to mobile devices, simulations, wearables, physical beacons, and more. xAPI can track micro-behaviors, state, and context such as… Reading an article or interacting with an eBook Watching a training video, stopping and starting it Training data from a simulation Performance in a mobile app Chatting with a mentor Physiological measures, such as heart-rate data Micro-interactions with e-learning content Team performance...

Harness the Hurricane - Embracing change in a rapidly changing world

VUCA   Volatility Uncertainty Complexity Ambiguity What type of person are you? Do you step-up when change is offered? We have to change as part of an educational institute. it's normal to ask "What's in it for me"? We all have the potential to respond differently to change. Luminality is the study of transitions. We don't open the door to a new place and just walk in. We step in and become paralysed to some degree. We realize that we cannot go back. How do we shorten the transition through paralysis? To adapt  we need to identify the garbage, the stuff that is holding us back. Things that are past their expiry date. Wipe the slate clean and stare at the blank page. Break some rules. Form synergistic relationships with people that are not like you that can expand what you do. For example a chef and the pope, serving food to the poor. Deal with the decision quick sand. Write the steps on a rubber glove. Carol Dweck - fixed mind set Ha...

Begbie Statue to be removed from law courts in New Westminster

I didn't know that Begbie was known as the "hanging judge" and that there was a Chilcotin War . From a  David P. Ball  article in the Metro , published on Sun Jun 04 2017 "First Nations whose six chiefs were hanged by British Columbia’s first judge, Sir Matthew Begbie are applauding the province’s Law Society for finally removing a statue celebrating him. The removal raises questions about other B.C. landmarks honouring Sir Matthew Begbie, nicknamed the “hanging judge” for his execution of six Tsilhqot’in Nation chiefs after the so-called Chilcotin War." http://www.metronews.ca/news/vancouver/2017/06/05/first-nation-lauds-law-society-bc-removal-begbie-statue.html

xAPI / Tin Can Presentation for the Institute for Performance and Learning - Victoria Chapter

Presentation for the Institute for Performance and Learning, the professional standards organization for the field in Canada. Tin Can API- A Brand New Specification for Learning Technology – Adam Lossing This session will be of interest to those that are using a very broad range of interconnected learning activities to support learning. Face-to-face, mobile, and randomly sourced content, to name but a few, can all be brought into your designs, through a software specification called Tin Can API, Experience API or xAPI. This specification is intended to be the successor of SCORM and will be the focus of this talk and demonstration. For those unfamiliar with SCORM, a brief overview will be offered before we dive into these changes that are happening in performance and learning delivery. https://performanceandlearning.ca/event/vancouver-island-chapter-novembers-double-learning-event/

Joomla as an LMS

I had the pleasure of attending this session at the 2015 Institute for Performance and Learning conference in Toronto. I have worked with Joomla a lot and was really excited to see just how far a talented developer can take it.

Nanaimo Museum - Moodle LMS Building, Hosting and Training

Problem: Getting all school children to the museum was a challenge in part due to time required to organize field trips and the cost of transportation. Solution: Create Moodle lessons from the archival material at the museum to allow teachers and students to explore the curriculum aligned content without leaving their schools. Moodle site was designed to mirror the look and feel of the existing site for the museum. I trained museum staff to build Moodle "Lessons". Responsive theme allows the use of the site on any device. A series of questions follow the initial reading in the lesson. Regular reports on the performance of students on the questions within the lesson were provided.

Palliative Care - Victoria Hospice/UBC Medical School

Open Course Problem: University of British Columbia (UBC) medical students needed more training in the area of hospice pain management. Solution: The medical school curriculum was being reviewed. I was contracted to build Storyline modules that followed a narrative model, in collaboration with oncologists and hospice specialists teaching at UBC.

The Family Cottage - Powtoon Project

Problem:  Client had become a leading authority on topics within the life insurance industry, and as such, had too many people calling to receive his counsel.  Solution: A series of informational videos using the cartoonish video creation tool, Powtoon. Working from existing PowerPoints, I curated the resources within Powtoon to bring the client's storytelling to life for his clients to learn from.

Application Video Guide - Camtasia Project

Open video guide Problem: Client received numerous calls from potential clients about an 18 page application form. Solution: An instructional video built in Camtasia, with a variety of callouts, pan and zooms, voice over narration links out to related video and a table of contents. This is now posted to their website resulting in a 71% reduction in time spent on the phone explaining the form and more productive information sessions, as clients come to them better informed. Feedback from the client: The feedback and my own understanding tells me that the application video did its job well. We have had positive feedback and no criticisms. Thanks for your work on this. It’s much appreciated. Call out with annotation Links to other video from within the video Search content function and a table of contents to quickly find sections of the application Project on the client's website http://nomadiceducation.ca/portfolio/skills_training_applica...
