Women and Children First

Working at the Justice Institute of BC in New Westminster, Canada, I see a lot of young women and men training and socializing in their quest to become citizens that serve and protect the rest of us.

One thing that I have been thinking about has been how well the youngish women fit in. They all seem to be pretty comfortable and I hope they truly are.

One event that brought this to a point for me was a situation where two young men and a young woman were coming through a door after having had lunch together. I was curious to see how this played out. With one of the guys holding the door, who would go through first the young man or the young woman? As it played out, the young man did, and there didn't appear to be any discomfort with this. This leads me to believe that chivalry may be a sexist act stemming from the "women and children first" practice.

Today I heard the CBC's show "The 180" hosted Jim Brown, with a segment entitled

"The phrase 'innocent women and children' is sexist, racist, and inaccurate"
